Weekend Schedule

Saturday

Sunday

 1:00-2:00pm

Southern Stuff: Applied Aesthetics 1

In this class we will learn a number of basic steps to idiom dances, how they use the same fundamentals, but executed in a way that results in different dances even when danced to the same music.

Southern Stuff: Applied Aesthetics 2

In this class we will further explore a number of idiom dances, learning how they build off the same fundamentals, but based on how they interact with the music results in different dances.

 2:00-3:00pm

Hustle & Flow: Using Tempo to Express the Music

There are a large number of ways to express musicality in Blues dancing, but one which our contemporary scene frequently forgets is changing the tempo of our movement to convey emotion and to provide a compliment or contrast to our dance and to the music. In this class we'll focus on how to provide texture and emphasis using this element of the Blues aesthetic.

This Is How We Do It: Bring the Party

Blues music was the party music of its time, and the idiom and freestyle dances are the accompanying party dances. We'll work on how to channel that party vibe in our dancing and learn how to let go of over-intellectualization and over-analyzation.

 3:00-4:00pm

Changing Our Perspective

In this class we will analyze what we do and why we do it. Focusing on Black American culture and music we will learn about how to be centered authentically as a Blues dancer.

Teacher Training

For those already teaching in Austin or other cities come with questions and be ready to practice. Damon and Kelsey will adapt this class to those present.
