Auditions
Since this is the first event that will be offering tiered classes in Struttin', we're going to use an audition process to determine your level of experience (but don't worry, classes in all tracks will be extensive and inspiring). Make sure you preregister and select "yes" when asked if you want to try out for audition-only classes! You can include a link to a video of you Struttin' as well, if you like, for our online pre-selection process.
As mentioned, we'll be filling some slots through an online pre-selection process. If the instructors are familiar with your dancing and a majority of them vouch for your placement in the Intensive track, you're in! If the instructors are not familiar enough with your dancing, you will have a chance to audition in-person on Saturday at 11:45 am and dance with the instructors.
If you cannot make auditions, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you. We will send out notifications prior to the event notifying you whether or not you need to show up for auditions on Saturday. If you do, please show up early and ready to audition.

Technique and Aesthetic (Grace & Nick)
Hopefully you already have an idea of what Struttin’ is, since you’re attending this event! In this class we’ll be teaching elements that will lead you to success throughout the rest of the weekend, with a strong focus on technique-driven details such as lean-to close embrace connection, down-and-out pulse, musicality and transitions. From there we’ll add some fun flair and patterns for leads and follows.

Inspiration from Balboa (Ross & Laura)
Developing at different times, in different places, to different music, struttin' and balboa share similarities in connection and room for expression. Many balboa patterns can be easily adapted within a struttin' context allowing both follower and leader expression without jeopardizing the connection or partner voice. Here we will share some of our favorite balboa patterns and how we actively use them in struttin'!

As the World Turns (Grace & Nick)
As the timeline of this dance progressed, couples began to innovate outside of close embrace, flitting in and out of open position. In this class we’ll move you along with those trailblazers and start to play with snappy partnered turns, redirections, and momentum-based movements!

Leader and Follower Play (Laura, Grace, & Nick)
Struttin' is a beautifully simple dance with endless opportunities for stylistic expression. Followers especially have a wide range of possible variations. Come discover some of Grace and Laura's favorite follower variations, and how leaders can respond to and support different follower choices.

Music Maketh Movement (Damon & Julie)
Once upon a time people erroneously believed slow=blues. Now some people believe fast blues=strutting. Also erroneous. We'll look at what makes music strutting music (hint it's not the tempo) and explore foundations of musical movement in this dance.

This Ain’t the Twist, but it does TWIST (Ross & Grace)
Connection is malleable. Like clay, the points can be realigned, reshaped, recast, to give rise to movement and stretch. Explore new ways to motivate movement from twists within the partnership, drawing bridges between different parts of the body as is facilitated by this dance’s dynamic and active connection.

Subtleties of Style (Damon & Julie)
Classic strutting was danced entirely in closed position, yet the expectation was that everyone had their own style and a multitude of ways to express their creativity. We'll focus on body shaping and footwork improvisation that will give you the tools to be your own special snowflake
